Two Reasons Your Safe Won’t Open

The purpose of a safe is to keep those who don't belong out. However, when your safe is trying to keep you out, this is a problem. If your safe won't open, don't panic just yet. There are a number of minor issues that can cause this type of problem; here are just two of them.

Jammed Bolt

If the bolt is jammed or stuck, this can cause difficulties when trying to open your safe. Generally, if this is the problem, you should hear the bolt or motor moving inside the safe after you enter your code, but it won't actually open. Don't try to beat the safe open, as this will likely only cause further damage.

Instead, after you enter the safe code, try to gently rotate the door handle in the opposite direction that you normally would when trying to open the door. Performing this step can help reduce some of the pressure that may be built-up around the bolt, which is preventing it from moving. If this is the cause, this step might be enough to give the bolt room to move and allow the safe to open.

Disconnected Wire

Particularly if your safe is located in a high-traffic area, a disconnected wire could be the blame for your failure to get the safe to open. Someone accidentally bumping into the safe could be enough to cause a wire behind the keypad to kink, loosen or detach, especially if it happens frequently. All of these scenarios can prevent the keypad from working. If you're entering your code on the keypad and the safe is being unresponsive, this is likely the problem you're dealing with.

If you can do so easily, gently remove the keypad and look on its rear side to see if any of the wires are misplaced. If a wire is kinked, you can try to straighten it out, and if it is loose, you can safely reattach it. However, if a wire is completely disconnected, don't try to reconnect it, even if you believe you know where it goes. Should you put the wire in the wrong position, you could damage the keypad, which will only lead to greater problems.
